Ways To Conserve Water

Water conservation should always be something we should strive to do, both for our wallets and as a good steward of the environment. Living in Jacksonville we get a significant amount of rain each year and there are many ways we can limit our water consumption. Below are a few tips we implement to do our part.

WATER CONSERVATION - PLUMBING TIPS

  • If you have an older toilet and shower head, think about replacing them with low-flow/energy-saving models. These new energy-efficient products use half the water of traditional models.
  • Toilet flappers are notorious for wasting significant amounts of water. You should consider replacing your toilet flapper every year, as they typically wear down quickly and are the most common cause of a running toilet.
  • Always check your faucets for any plumbing leaks or slow drips. If you notice a slow drip you will want to repair it. A leaky faucet can waste up to 100 gallons of water per day. Most faucet leaks are due to the (O-Ring, Corroded Valve Seat, Worn Out Washer, Loose Parts, or Worn Out Seals).
  • If you have a sprinkler system make sure you have each zone set to a timer control. Also, make sure your sprinklers are adjusted to only hit your grass or flower beds. You don’t want your sprinklers hitting the street or driveway and not your grass.
  • Stop letting your faucet run, when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. You can waste over 5 gallons of water.
  • Take showers rather than baths. A 5-minute shower will use 15-25 gallons of water. An average bath will use almost 40 gallons of water. You can cut water consumption in half by taking a shower.
  • Take advantage of the gifts mother nature provides. When it rains put out buckets to collect rainwater. This way you can use this collected rainwater to water your plants and shrubs, rather than using a hose or your sprinklers.
  • If you have hanging plants use ice cubes to water them rather than pouring water into them. When you pour water into a plant you will have a runoff, verses ice cubes will slowly melt giving the plant time to absorb and soak up the water.
  • If you boil water for cooking use only the amount you need. Also if you are boiling hard-boiled eggs or leafy green vegetables. When you are done, let the water cool and you can then use that water for your plants.
  • If you are buying new grass or shrubs, purchase the kind that requires less water for maintenance.

We all can do our part to conserve water. A little can go a long way. If everyone did their part we can collectively make a huge dent in limiting our water consumption.
